Description: This is only a test how Messier 51 appears in ideal conditions at 11 cm Newton. As you can see, the spiral arms are obvious but they are still pretty faint. I think that you can see same details with 15-20 cm telescope in typical Finnish skies.

Description: I think the sketch tells everything...well-known Whirlpool Galaxy. The spiral arms are very bright and clear, they are visible easily with direct vision. There are also several brighter areas in the arms.

Description: Very clear and sharp spiral structure is visible with direct vision. There are three brighter areas in the spiral arms. An arm, which starts south-side of the core, is much brighter and it has two brightenings. Other arm is very long and it has a brighter area on west. The core is pretty small and bright, almost stellar and elongated in E-W. The bridge between M51 and NGC 5195 is extremely faint and visible only with averted vision when M51 is out side of the field. NGC 5195 is roundish haze which has a pretty tiny core, there are also some other structure visible. The hardest object in this field is a minor galaxy IC 4278 on the east side. It's obvious but barely visible with averted vision.
